EV myths vs reality: What businesses need to know
We speak with a lot of businesses that are curious about electric vehicles but haven’t made the move yet - and the same concerns come up time and time again.
So we thought it might help to share some of the most common EV myths, and how things have changed.

Myth 1: EVs are too expensive to run
Electric vehicles are cheaper to run than petrol or diesel vehicles.
Electricity costs less per mile, servicing is simpler with fewer moving parts,
and tax incentives reduce overheads. With lower fuel, maintenance, and
operating costs, EVs deliver long-term savings that make them a financially
smart choice for any fleet.
Myth 2: EVs aren’t suitable for business fleets
Whether you’re doing urban deliveries or long-distance
trips, there are electric vehicles on the market today that fit the bill and
support for commercial fleets is getting better all the time.
Myth 3: The charging infrastructure isn’t there yet
Public charging in expanding fast and installing on-site
chargers is easier than ever. With smart apps and live availability tracking,
it’s now easy for drivers to find, access and use chargers on the go.
Myth 4: EVs don’t perform in winter
Cold weather can affect range slightly, but not dramatically
and planning tools help drivers stay in control year-round.
Myth 5: It’s better to wait for EV tech to mature
The technology is maturing fast, and early movers gain
valuable operational insights, access better incentives, and avoid future
compliance headaches.
Myth 6: EVs are more complicated to drive
Electric vehicles aren’t more complicated to drive. They’re as simple as
any automatic. The main difference is using a touchscreen instead of buttons,
which feels natural if you use a smartphone or tablet. Once you’ve spent a few
minutes behind the wheel, driving an EV feels smooth, intuitive, and
effortless.
Myth 7: EVs frequently catch fire
Despite headlines, EVs are far less likely to catch fire
than petrol or diesel cars. UK data shows they account for just 0.24% of vehicle
fires, and Swedish figures reveal petrol cars are 20 times more likely to
ignite. The facts are clear: EV fires are rare, not routine.
Myth 8: Limited battery range makes EVs impractical for businesses
Modern EVs offer ranges of 200–300 miles, easily covering most daily business journeys. With expanding rapid-charging networks and
workplace charging options, downtime is minimal. Lower running costs, predictable energy prices, and zero-emission zones make them not just practical
but financially smart for fleets looking to cut costs and carbon.
Myth 9: Do EVs damage the road because they’re heavier?
No, they don’t damage roads more than petrol or diesel fleet
vehicles. Most road wear comes from HGVs, not cars or vans. Fleet EVs use tyres
engineered for extra weight and regenerative braking that improves control and
efficiency. In real-world use, EV fleets have no greater road impact than
traditional ones.
Myth 10: EV adoption will overload the grid
Increased adoption won’t overload the grid. In the UK, National Grid says the it could comfortably handle even a full switch to EVs, with demand rising only around 10%. Smart charging at off-peak times will balance usage, while continued grid upgrades ensure capacity grows with demand, not against it.
Switching to electric vehicles can feel like a big step, but the reality is far more positive than the myths suggest. The technology, infrastructure, and support are already in place to make the move practical and cost-effective. For businesses focused on efficiency, savings, and sustainability, there’s never been a better time to go electric.
