The EV transition
It’s no secret that electric vehicles (EVs) are fast growing in popularity. There are various reasons why this is the case, with the push for reducing carbon emissions being the main one. The EU has stated that the sale of petrol and diesel cards and vans will be banned from 2035, which means EVs will soon become the norm on roads across the country.
However, there are still some doubts about electric vehicles and how they function. One uncertainty is built around something that is described as “range anxiety”.
What is range anxiety?
Despite their noted advantages, there are certain psychological barriers that continue to prevent potential buyers from opting for an electric vehicle. One of the biggest concerns is range anxiety. This anxiety is built around the worry of how long an EV can last before it runs out of battery.
The feeling is similar to the worry about a vehicle running out of petrol in the middle of a journey. However, the number of petrol stations is significantly higher than EV charging points. This means if someone is travelling across long stretches of road, where it’s unlikely they can find any nearby EV charging ports, people can fear being left stranded in their vehicle.
Is range anxiety still an issue in 2024?
When electric vehicles were first introduced, it was understandable for people to experience range anxiety. After all, it was a new technology, and it takes time for new technology to grow and become prevalent. In the case of EVs, this was perhaps most notable in terms of charging points. With limited charging points available, the anxiety of being able to find one when on a low battery grew.
Now it’s 2024. EVs are no longer new. They are becoming the standard. This is evident based on the increasing number of public charging points now found across Ireland. This helps to greatly reduce the anxiety of being able to find a charger in time. Add in that EV batteries are more powerful and capable of travelling longer distances without needing a charge, and there’s less reason for this worry to exist.
However, range anxiety hasn’t completely disappeared. Many of those public chargers remain concentrated in cities and larger towns. As a result, those living in more rural locations can still experience anxiety due to a lack of nearby chargers.
Overcoming range anxiety
If you are suffering from range anxiety, there are various steps you can take to overcome this mindset. One step is to ensure you have a specialist EV app downloaded which allows you to search for nearby charging points. These apps even include details such as how much battery will be used to get to a charger.
Another point is to simply be prepared. It may seem obvious, but it’s something that plenty overlook. If you’re to embark on a long journey, for example, make sure your vehicle is fully charged overnight. You should also check if your EV can make it to the destination or if you’ll need to find a charging point during the journey.
