Nearly all commercial motor vehicle drivers required to maintain Records of Duty Status (RODS) must use an approved Electronic Logging Device (ELD) to electronically record driving hours. Both the United States and Canada have ELD mandates in place. In the U.S., drivers of vehicles manufactured before 2000 are exempt from using an ELD, as are drivers who are required to keep RODS for eight days or fewer within any 30-day period. Starting January 1, 2024, all trucks operating in California must provide proof of compliance with CARB regulations to continue operating in the state.
