To kick-off our 'Inside Telecoms' series, Vikki Nunn, Director of Telecoms & IT at Radius, describes her career journey, the evolving future of telecommunications and challenges ahead.

Finding my place in telecoms
When I first graduated with a law degree, a career in telecoms wasn’t on my radar. My journey started in a software company focused on tracking and scheduling, and it was there, through partnerships with networks like EE, that I first encountered the world of telecoms. I was curious, and that curiosity led me deeper into IT, security, and eventually into telecoms itself.
Joining EE was a turning point. I built out a reseller channel that, interestingly, Radius now resells today. Over the years, I have worked across pre-sales, desk sales, consulting, and leadership roles. Each step has expanded my knowledge and strengthened my leadership, but one constant has kept me in this industry: its pace of change. Telecoms has never stood still. It is not just about mobile phones; it is the enabler of business communication. The constant evolution has kept me excited and engaged for more than 16 years.
The constant evolution of telecoms
Looking back, one of the most transformational shifts I have witnessed was the move from fixed and wired systems to cloud technology. That transition reshaped everything, driving consolidation, accelerating mergers and acquisitions, and forcing providers to rethink how they added value. Networks could no longer rely on selling lines and minutes. They needed to bring in complementary services that would support customers through their digital transformation.

Opportunities within industry challenges
That theme of change is still with us today. The industry is navigating challenges around consolidation and legacy infrastructure. Many providers are still weighed down by outdated systems, but that is where the real opportunity lies. Those who modernise, simplify the customer journey, and combine innovation with excellent service will stand out in the years ahead.
AI and automation are great examples of this. There is a lot of fear about machines replacing people, but I see it differently. AI should free people from repetitive admin and give them space to focus on high-value conversations where human intelligence, empathy, and expertise really matter.
Something as simple as automating routine service queries can transform both the customer and employee experience. Customers get quick answers while employees gain the time to tackle complex issues. It is about working smarter, not replacing people.
Staying secure in an evolving threat landscape
Security is another priority. Cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated, and the biggest risks often sit within the network rather than at the surface. Businesses that take security seriously are the ones that are proactive, learning from peers, testing approaches, and addressing vulnerabilities before they become weaknesses. Working with trusted experts is essential. Build resilience now, and you are not just protecting your organisation today, you are safeguarding its future.

The future of business is connected
Telecoms has always been an industry built on change. Its future belongs to those who are prepared to adapt by modernising legacy systems, embracing AI and automation, and staying ahead of cyber threats. At its heart, this industry is about enabling people and businesses to connect more efficiently, securely, and meaningfully. That is the challenge and the opportunity we all share.
