The recovery report

With the continued threat of vehicle and asset theft over the past couple of years, it has never been more important to protect your assets. Here, we take a deep dive into the latest statistics on theft in the UK and recovery stats from our own Radius Investigations Unit.

Vehicle theft in the UK

Vehicle theft is not a problem of the past; it is a growing concern that affects many drivers across the UK today.  In 2024, a total of  61,343 cars were reported stolen to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), marking the third-highest annual total in the past decade. Statistics like these make it clear that theft remains a significant issue, highlighting the importance of protecting your vehicle.

Theft trends: insights from The Equipment Register (TER) and industry sources.

Like vehicle theft, asset theft remains a serious concern across many industries. Criminals are increasingly targeting high-value equipment, with plant machinery among the most common. From construction sites to agricultural properties, a wide range of valuable machinery is at risk.

Statistics show that the UK construction industry alone loses over £800 million annually due to equipment and material theft, resulting in replacement costs, increased insurance premiums, and project delays. Understanding which assets are most commonly targeted can help businesses like yours take proactive steps to protect them.

Stats from the TER database show that the most frequently stolen plant machines in the UK include:

  • Trailers
  • Excavators
  • Site Dumpers
  • Telehandlers
  • Quad Bikes
  • Generators

The numbers behind the crime

  • Vehicle theft rates in the UK have remained at a 15-year high, with 129,159 vehicles reported stolen between April 2023 and March 2024.
  • For the year ending March 2024, only 2.2% of vehicle theft offences in England and Wales resulted in a charge or summons.
  • 100,000 theft records registered on TER's database by police, owners, and insurers, amounting to a combined value exceeding £200 million.
  • Equipment theft in the UK is estimated to exceed £50 million annually, averaging approximately £1 million per week.

How technology is changing the game

Approximately 71% of fleets across the UK and Europe now use GPS tracking systems, and this technology has now become a standard across many industries. For security, trackers equipped with stolen vehicle recovery features are at the forefront of the market and have proved highly effective in recovering stolen vehicles and assets.

When thieves and organised crime gangs steal vehicles or equipment, they will attempt to find and disable any tracking devices through tactics and tools like tracing wires, detecting GSM network signals, and using GSM/GPS jamming devices. The Radius neon-r recovery tracker is designed to avoid detection by thieves. It is battery-powered with no external wires and operates as a sleeper unit, reducing the risk of any signals being picked up by handheld scanners. It can be installed in a hidden location and uses multiple technologies to enable our Investigations Unit to find the stolen asset, even when jammers are used. Solutions like this help reduce risk, recover valuable assets, and in turn, lowers your costs.

As it stands, Radius’ Investigations Unit has a 98% recovery rate for cars and vans, with an overall recovery rate of 96%. They have successfully recovered over £25m worth of assets in the last 5 years, demonstrating reliable theft protection and exceptional recovery success for fleets across the UK and Europe.
